Right now I'm using a Marshall Stack and his sig strat. I drive the stack with the DOD and use NS-2 to clean it up. I can get his later tone.
Any body been able to get his 1984 tone (Rising Force)?
How do YOU get his tone?

I know nothing about guitars -- I play violin. Just thought I'd add that disclaimer before someone tells me I'm stupid for saying what I'm about to say.
Have you looked at what he did differently in the early Rising Force years to how his setup is now? I think it's mostly stayed the same, except he used to disconnect the middle pickup. I read in an interview that he's stopped doing that and he thinks he was being stupid back then. Also, his early albums were recorded in mono (I don't know if that affects the tone, or perception of the tone, but that's something else that was different).

i was just thinking about all the changes he made and I noticed that he uses the YJM308 now and I have heard its much harsher then the older DODs.

I think I have found just about everything you need to know about Yngwie's setup throughout the years, or at least references to where you can find this information: www.yngwie.org/equipment/index.htmlYou've probably already read it all but that's all I have at the moment. Hope this helps.

Maybe he used 10s for the Rising Force album then swtiched to 8s after he got in the crash???

I've read in lots of places that he did used to use 10s. Yngwie says that on the higher strings, the guage makes no difference to the tone and he uses 8s now coz it makes bending easier, I think.

About is earlier tone, I run a vs100 head thru a 1960 4x12 with his sig strat and the 308. You have to remember that the earlier albums sound different mostly becuase of the way that they are recorded and the VOLUME of the stack is very important. I find that if I turn the gain on the head down to almost nill and the pedal all the way up then crank the master vol to like 5 or 6 (pretty loud for my house) you get the silkier tone with the low end crunch. also I thinck the 308's are harsher as I have used a 250 and it did sound mellower and lately his live tone has been real scratchy.

has anyone disconnected their tone controls on their sig strat like he does? I'd like to know if it makes a big difference in sound.

I have disconnected the tone controls, not from my sig strat though, but customized strat with dimarzio yjm pickups. I haven't heard a change in the sound, it's just that both tones are on FULL all the time (and of course no chance of changing that, unless you connect them again).

I think he disconnects them cuz when he changes pick up positions he might nudge the controls and change the sound, obviously he doesnt want that so out with the screwdriver and hammer!!
