I find Perpetual Flame to be one of Yngwie's greatest albums. You don't think that he can possibly do another great album to match or surpass his prior ones but he did it. A very strong album indeed. Can't really think of any dud songs. All great kickass stuff. 12 songs too, no scrimping. I say congrats to Malmsteen for a job well done. The guy is an inexhaustible supply of talent. All I ask is that he restrain himself to one guitar shoulder swing per show, and drop the playing with the teeth altogether. Way too gimmicky for his stature as a musician. His dentist will thank him. The shoulder swing is also just plain dangerous. It only takes one guitar neck in the thigh to ruin a night.

I didn't like Perpetual Flame when I first heard it but it grew on me. Love Death Dealer (sometimes I listen to it on repeat), especially the descending sequences. Eleventh Hour was actually the only one I liked the first time I heard it but now it's not even in my top 5 on the album. Absolutely love Heavy Heart -- it's like waking up from a great dream (I always have music at the end of my dreams if I wake up naturally and the music I hear has that sort of quality). I personally love the shoulder swing. Yngwie's been doing it so long I reckon he knows what he's doing. It's just one of those things that has to be part of his live performance. He has those particular Yngwie-isms (dop kicking the picks is my fav, along with dancing like a horse) and I know that the music doesn't need anything to make it more exciting, but it is fun to watch. Smashing up guitars on the other hand, I am a bit in two minds about. It's exciting but also very wasteful, so not sure what to make of it really.
