Wow. Once again, as always, it is difficult to come up with words to describe an Yngwie Malmsteen show. My wife and I were the first people to get into the building, and quickly secured our spot in the front row directly in front of Yngwie's mic.
The night started with a local act called Avatar opening the show. They were kids, and they tried hard.
Then Orange Sky hit the stage, and many in the audience didn't know what to expect. However, they won over every person there. Their show was fantastic.
Then after a long delay of around an hour, Yngwie finally hit the stage at around 10:40PM. He opened the show with "Rising Force", which always is a great opener. He played four tracks from the new "Unleash The Fury" CD. The first of which was "Locked & Loaded", which works very well live. He also played "Exile", which to be honest really didn't come off very well live. However "Winds Of War" brought down the house. The entire crowd was into that one. "Revolution" also came off well (and Doogie let me sing into his mic at one point). The only let down in regards to new material was that the three best songs on the new album weren't played. "Cracking The Whip", "The Bogeyman" and "Cherokee Warrior" would have been welcome additions to the set.
But regardless of that, the rest of the set was spectacular. Other songs included {in no particular order} were "Rise Up", "Baroque & Roll", "Never Die", "Demon Driver", "Far Beyond The Sun", "Star Spangled Banner", "Bedroom Eyes", "Dreaming", "You Don't Remember, I'll Never Forget", "Fugue", the guitar solo (Trilogy Suite / Krakatau / Red House), and covers of "Demon's Eye", & "Burn" before closing the set with "I'll See The Light Tonight". As always, a great set from The Maestro that was rougly an hour and forty five minutes long. The only glaring omission was the lack of "Black Star" in the set.
It also has to be noted that Yngwie's performance looked to be much more spirited than in previous years. He looks great with all the weight loss and that he no longer smokes or drinks. His lifestyle changes really seem to have effected his performance in a very positive way.
The band were also very good. Patrick is just a monster on the drums. And Doogie was again excellent, although his mic seemed to be very low in the mix.
After the show about a dozen or so fans waited out by the bus to get some items signed. It took almost an hour and a half for Yngwie to come to the bus, and once again didn't really interact with the fans at all, but instead had someone take take our items onto the bus for Yngwie to sign and then gave them back to us. It would have been nice if he took the time to talk to us since we waited that long out in the cold, but what can you do? My wife and I once again just would have liked the chance to talk to Yngwie and thank him because we met each other at his show in Jersey back in '99 on the Alchemy Tour, and would never have met each other if not for him. But, oh well. What's important is the show.......and that I got my poster of the Trilogy painting signed.
